Obituary

Albert Carl Schlichting was born April 13, 1928, and entered his eternal home peacefully on
Thursday, February 13, 2025, surrounded by his family. Al was the youngest of four siblings.
He was born and lived in a small farmhouse near Potter, Nebraska. This was during the early
days of The Dust Bowl and The Depression. He had said his first home "may well have been
called a shack but it was a shack filled with Christian love." He often remarked how God had
blessed him and his family after those early days. At age 6, his family moved to nearby Sidney,
Nebraska. There he attended St. Paul's Lutheran Church and School and was confirmed on
March 29, 1942. When he was 14, the family moved to Seward, Nebraska where his father and
mother managed the dining facilities of Concordia Teachers College. This laid the groundwork
for him to become a teacher in Lutheran elementary schools. There he attended and graduated
from Concordia High School and Concordia Teachers College. After his graduation, Albert
received his first call to St. Luke's Lutheran School in Reno, Nevada where he would serve as
principal and teacher for the next 10 years. During that time he met Georgene Holtzen who had
also graduated from Concordia Teacher's College and received her first call to teach the lower
grades with Al at St. Luke's. They were married in 1955 and were inseparable and by each
other's side through their 67 years together. In 1960, Al took a call to Faith Lutheran School in
Denver, CO where he, Georgene, and their three children lived. He would serve as principal,
teacher, coach, organist, and choir director for the next 32 years. After retiring from teaching,
he and Georgene moved to Parker, CO residing there until moving to Spring, TX in 2015 where
they were able to enjoy being close to children, grandchildren, and great-grand children.
He enjoyed playing and coaching sports as a young man and continued to be an avid sports
fan. He closely followed his Nebraska Cornhuskers, St. Louis Cardinals, Denver Broncos, and
gradually became an Astros fan. He served as an usher for the Denver Broncos for 50 years
and ushered for numerous other Denver sports teams and events through the years. He was
gifted with words and penned some beautiful writings through the years. A favorite hobby was
doing wood working. You would often see him handing out one of his small handmade crosses
to anyone he would meet encouraging them to remember that God is always with them.
He was a man of great faith and integrity and touched the lives of so many during his 96 years.
He led his family with a Christian example and was passionate that they had a foundation that
was grounded in Christ. Throughout his life he touched so many lives from the students he
taught and their parents, athletes he coached, co-workers he taught and ushered with, friends,
neighbors, and residents and workers at his assisted living facility. He was a man with a kind
heart and a great sense of humor. He lived life loving his Lord, his wife, and family.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Sarah Schlichting, three siblings, Gilbert,
Lois, and Alma, and his beloved wife, Georgene. He is survived by their three children and
spouses, Kevin (Betsy), Donna Mueller (Dave) and Janet Nazarenus (Ed). He is also survived
by 6 precious grandchildren and 11 beautiful great-grandchildren, all of whom brought much joy
and love throughout his life.
A memorial service is being planned later in February and will be held at Trinity Lutheran
Church. The date will be forthcoming. Since Lutheran education was such a significant part of
Al's life, memorials may be made to Salem Lutheran School in Tomball, Texas, where his
granddaughter teaches and great grandchildren attend, or to Concordia University Nebraska.
