Carol Jo Strange (née Hurt) died Saturday, May 27, 2023, in Katy, TX at the age of 85. She was born October 2, 1937, in Indianapolis, IN to parents Rodman Thomas Hurt (1897-1976) and Nellie Gertrude Hurt (née Baggett) (1899-1998).
Carol was an alumna of Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis, IN. She held an undergraduate degree from Purdue University and a graduate degree from George Washington University.
Carol had a career in education with Prince George's County Maryland Public Schools which included serving as the Principal of the James E. Duckworth Special Education Center in Beltsville, MD.
Carol married Richard Theron Strange (1937-2014) on February 9, 1963, in Indianapolis, IN. They lived in Seattle, WA, Alabama, and Takoma Park, MD before settling in Silver Spring, MD where they resided over 30 years and raised two sons, Michael Scott Strange and Kevin Andrew Strange. In retirement they had a small avocado farm in Escondido, CA, then spent their final years in the Cypress, TX area.
They traveled the world together, most often by cruise ship, with repeat trips to Norway and Alaska. Carol enjoyed quilting, true crime shows, wine and cheese parties, and almost any type of gambling from horse racing to slot machines, but particularly Texas Holdem poker. She played in many poker tournaments and delighted in exploiting players who dared to underestimate that little old lady at the table.
She is preceded in death by her husband. She is survived by her sons and many grandchildren.
