Obituary

Cheryl Harris was born on December 22, 1953, in Chicago, Illinois to James Lee Harris and Virginia Grace Gardner. A proud graduate of Kenwood Academy High School in Chicago, Cheryl dedicated more than 34 years to caregiving, a profession that reflected her selfless nature and nurturing heart. Her work was far more than a job; it was a calling through which she brought dignity and comfort to countless lives.

Cheryl's resilience was unwavering. She met life's challenges with courage and humility, never seeking recognition for the burdens she bore. Her wit and laughter were gifts she shared generously bringing light even during challenging times. Whether through a perfectly timed joke or a warm smile, Cheryl had an extraordinary way of lifting spirits. One of her favorite sayings was, "It's a Girl Thing!"  No matter what you asked her if she did not want to answer she would simply say, "It's a Girl Thing! You wouldn't understand and then sarcastically laugh and say "Yeah!"

She found joy in reading, music, and watching sports, movies, and documentaries; interests that spoke to her curious mind and love for storytelling. Reading was her first love; Stephen King was her favorite author and "Pet Sematary" was her favorite book. She read hundreds of books during her lifetime. If she watched a movie that was based on a book, she would quote it line by line, making everyone frustrated who watched with her while she laughed. If there was something different in the movie, she would say "that wasn't in the book, now they're just making up stuff". Baseball was her favorite sport to watch followed by heavy weight boxing. The Chicago Cubs were her favorite team and her favorite boxing match to watch was Marvin Hagler vs. Thomas Hearns, she would refer to this boxing match as "The War!" She loved going to the dog park with her dog "Girl Dog" and playing with the other dogs and fellowshipping with the other dog owners. When asked why she named her dog, "Girl Dog" she would respond, "Because that's what she is, a girl dog!"

A woman of Christian faith, Cheryl lived her beliefs through acts of kindness, patience, and devotion to others. When asked if she knew Jesus, she would enthusiastically say, "Yes, He's the Christ, the anointed one! Laughing, she would remind everyone that Christ was not Jesus' last name. Cheryl accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and as an adult recommitted her life to Christ. She loved to read the bible and could quote chapter and verse with the best, but most importantly she hid the Word of God in her heart. Her all-time favorite gospel hymn is "Amazing Grace!"

Cheryl passed away peacefully on November 30, 2025, in Houston, Texas at the age of 71. She led a life marked by quiet strength, grace, and compassion. She left her family with the blueprint of what it means to fight the good fight of faith. She fought the good fight, she finished her race and she kept the faith and God has awarded her the crown of righteousness.

Cheryl's legacy lives on through her children: Samuel Leslie (Khara) Harris of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Katrina Shaneese (Arvis) Lawson of Spring, Texas; and Karlton Stacey (Karla) Harris of Cypress, Texas. She will be deeply missed by her fourteen grandchildren—DreVon, Diamonique, James, Robyn, Jeremy, Terrell, Christian, Anthony, Michael, Joseph, Isaiah, Josiah, Karlton II., and Dinah; seven great-grandchildren: Delilah, Kamari, Julian, Leah, Ellee, Rylee, Jaxx; three nephews; Gregory Samuels, Erik (Theresa) Samuels and Bryan (Gina) Samuels, two cousins; John and Dennis Butler and a host of step-grandchildren, step-great grandchildren, family and friends.

She now rests alongside those who preceded her in death: special friend Robert (Bob) Kirchner, mother Virginia Grace Gardner; father James Lee Harris; sister Lydia Grace Tallman; brother James Lee Harris III; grandparents Doris Batrum Gardner and Harry Gardner, Lee Henry Harris and Zula Algee, grandson Raheem Harris; aunt Eloise Butler; uncle Harry Gardner; and nephew Craig Harris Watson.

May Cheryl's memory continues to inspire love and compassion in all who knew her.
