1927-2020
Dorothy "Dottie" Derbyshire Smith, age 92, passed away Wednesday, January 15, 2020. She was born in Warrington, England on February 8, 1927 to Stan and Dora Derbyshire.
Dottie was the fourth child of nine children. They all lived in a four room house, and she worked at a shirt factory making button holes from the age of 14 to 25 years old.
She met the love of her life in February of 1952, Bill Smith, while he was serving in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, and stationed at the U.S. base in Warrington. They married within the year in England, where Bill Jr. "Buddy", was born.
In January of 1954, upon Bill's fulfillment of his military obligations, Bill, Dottie, and Buddy returned to the United States on a troop ship, where they began their new adventures. After a brief stay in Oklahoma City with Bill's parents, the three moved to Houston and Bill started work with Johns Manville Corp, where he worked his entire career. Dottie and Bill had 2 more children while in Houston, John and Karon.
Dottie was an active bowler and was still maintaining a 150 average till the age of 91. She was very house proud and won yard of the month many times.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Stan and Dora Derbyshire, brothers, Bill and Stan, and sisters, Mabel and Amy.
She is survived by her husband, William "Bill" Smith Sr., 2 sons, William "Buddy" Smith Jr. and wife Lou, son John Smith, and daughter Karon McMahan and husband Robert. Grandchildren are Shane, Andrea, Jack, and Amber. Twelve great grandchildren are Barrett, Tommy, Clara, Tessa, Joelle, Ella, Luke, Micah, Sara, John, Susanna, and April.
At Dottie's request, no public service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Alzheimer Association at alz.org.
