Obituary

"The mountains are calling and I must go". - John Muir
On Sunday, May 24th, 2020, Douglas Charlton McCammon passed away too soon, albeit
peacefully from cancer, surrounded by his family at his home in Houston, Texas, at the age
of 51. Doug was born at Homestead AFB, Florida, on March 10th, 1969, to Carol and Robert
McCammon (deceased). He is survived by his wife - the love of his life - Maureen Fitzgerald
McCammon; his mother, Carol McCammon; his brother Richard; his brother Michael,
sister-in-law Julee, and nephews, Maxwell, Benjamin and Samuel. He is also survived by his
sister-in-law, Candace Fitzgerald; brother-in-law, Edward Fitzgerald, sister-in-law Kathleen,
and nieces Katelyn and Lauren, as well as many loving friends and colleagues that he
considered family.
Doug grew up in Tampa, Florida. He attended Berkeley Preparatory School and graduated
cum laude from Rice University (Wiess College) in Mechanical Engineering in 1991. Upon
graduation, Doug went to work for Royal Dutch Shell in Process Engineering. He was based
in Houston in the Upstream Division of the oil and gas business. He enjoyed 29 years with
Shell where he was a brilliant and well-respected engineer becoming a technical authority.
He designed processes and safety improvements for multi-billion dollar oil and gas projects
across six continents. Always eager to share his expertise, Doug will be missed as an
instructor, mentor and manager at Shell. He was a man known for his integrity and highly
valued as a friend.
Among Doug's other achievements were Eagle Scout, memberships in the National Honor
Society and The Cum Laude Society. Doug had a lifelong enthusiasm for knowledge with a
passion for history but he also loved the wilderness and was an avid outdoorsman. Music
and animals were also a central part of his life, especially his Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Doug
was known to enjoy single-malt Scotch whisky. He savored lifting a glass over a meal with
friends while contemplating the human condition.
Doug will be cremated and his ashes will be scattered on his property in the Colorado
Rockies. A celebration of his life will be planned once the COVID-19 threat has passed. A
memorial page is available at www.gracefulmemorialchapel.com
