Obituary

Dulcy Anne (Green) Spease passed from this Earth on Saturday, August 21, 2021, at HCA Houston Healthcare in Conroe, Texas, after a hard-fought battle with COPD, lung cancer, and ultimately pneumonia. She was 74 years old. She is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Melvin Spease, of Willis, Texas, as well as her daughters Melissa Avery (husband: Tim) and Holly Avery (husband: Kurt), both of Houston, Texas. Also surviving are her six grandchildren, in whom she took great pride: Elizabeth, Sarah, Hunter, Allison, Bryan, and William; and her two beloved sisters, Ellen Green and Holly Green, both of Lawrence, Kansas. She is preceded in death by her parents, Frank Robert Green and Dorothy Mae (Schubert) Green, both of Lawrence, Kansas.

Dulcy was born on July 3, 1947, in Lawrence, Kansas. She graduated from Lawrence High School in 1965 and attended the University of Kansas. In 1966 she left the university to work for the Lawrence City Clerk's office. Dulcy met her future husband, Mel, in 1964, and after four years of dating the pair embarked upon a grand adventure spanning 52 years of marriage, beginning on December 27, 1968. Dulcy and Mel began their married life in Honolulu, Hawaii, where Mel was stationed at Pearl Harbor as a submariner on the USS Kamehameha. Mel's service in the Navy took the couple to Charleston, SC (where daughter Melissa was born in 1970) and Groton, CT as well. Daughter Holly was born in 1972, soon after which Mel was honorably discharged. The couple settled in Columbia, MO, where they lived for 12 years. In 1974, Dulcy took a position at Columbia Regional Hospital as Collections Manager. She worked there 8 years, during which time she made many lifelong friends. In 1982, Dulcy left Columbia Regional to explore a career in investing. While she eventually moved on to other opportunities, Dulcy showed great talent for and success in working with money throughout her life.

In 1984, the family moved to Durham, North Carolina, where Dulcy briefly continued her pursuit of financial advising with First Investors. Another lifelong passion – renovation of homes and interior decorating – prompted her to acquire a real estate license. She worked for Century 21 for two years, until Mel's work in the nuclear power industry took the family to Granbury, Texas in 1987. Soon after arriving, Dulcy drew upon her previous experience in medical collections and billing as a Business Office Manager for Charter Hospital in Fort Worth. She worked for Charter 6 years, until yet another move took her and Mel to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Dulcy and Mel spent 15 happy years in Chattanooga, where Dulcy worked briefly as Business Office Manager for Greenleaf Mental Health Centers, then quit to focus full time on renovating the couple's 1920's bungalow in North Chattanooga, a labor of love. Much of the work on the house was done by Dulcy and Mel themselves, and the finished project was widely admired among friends and neighbors.

Upon Mel's retirement from TVA, the couple decided to return to Texas to be closer to their children and grandchildren. The couple settled in Willis, Texas in 2010, in the lakeside community of Point Aquarius. There they befriended a group of neighbors dubbed "The Sunsetters," with whom they enjoyed many laughs and sunset conversations on the shores of Lake Conroe. They also had the pleasure of living mere miles from lifelong friends and fellow Navy vets Dave and Bonnie Fezatte. From Dulcy's diagnosis of lung cancer in 2015 to her final days, she and Mel were (and continue to be) buoyed by the unwavering support of family and friends old and new in their community.

Dulcy desired cremation with no interment. A reception celebrating her life will be held Saturday, October 16, 2021, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at the Point Aquarius Clubhouse, 12550 Pegasus Dr., Willis, TX 77318. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Dulcy's name to the American Cancer Society.
