IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Elizabeth Anne
Leupp Power
July 22, 1955 – May 22, 2023
Elizabeth Anne Leupp Power entered God's presence on May 22, 2023 at the age of 67 in Kingwood, Texas at home. Her loving family assisted Beth in the final stages of the journey when she passed to Heaven slipping away holding the hand of her husband, Jim at 6:45 AM, just two months shy of 42 years of marriage. Beth had a wonderful final Mother's Day with beautiful cards, singing and much laughter and joy. Sons David, Thomas and Matthew, daughter-in-law Savannah and daughter Katie all gathered, and Katie orchestrated the gift giving, card reading, and singing and music filled the home. The following day, daughter Kristen arrived from Brisbane, Australia to come and care so brilliantly for her mother the last week of her life. Beth left this world surrounded by the love of her family and friends.
Beth was a woman of great character who served the Lord since her youth and was a role model as a mother, teacher, friend, and follower of Christ to the many young women she met in church, the Navy and in the community over the years. She actively sought friendships with both her peers and older women being supportive of them, always caring for them and always being there for them. She yearned for this world to be conformed to serving God and always worked toward giving her best in all her activities whether it be in her musical talents as pianist, accompanist, or choir director in support of churches, Navy Chapels, or community school systems.
Beth was born in Fargo, North Dakota on July 22, 1955, to Franklin and Betty Leupp. The family moved to Kansas City for Frank's federal civil service position with the Department of Agriculture and subsequently arrived in Camarillo, California in 1968 following his transfer to the Naval Ships Weapons Station in Port Hueneme. Beth completed her junior and senior high years graduating in 1973 and as an exceptional pianist was enrolled as a scholarship piano performance major at California State University Northridge. She graduated in June 1979 with a Bachelor of Music and was engaged in support of community chorale groups, stage productions, musicals, and private teaching as well as teaching music appreciation in the junior college system and was the church pianist at the Camarillo Evangelical Free Church.
In February of 1981 she met Ensign James E. (Jim) Power who was serving at Naval Air Station PT Mugu in Ventura County at the Evangelical Free Church. Jim had been told by a retired Captain, Don Bennett, in the local Officers Christian Fellowship chapter that he needed to meet this young lady. This fortunate union resulted in nearly 42 years of marriage and the birth of five children as well as an adventure that took them around the world and throughout the four corners of the United States.
Their stops along the way included Jim's first assignment at PT Mugu, then in 1982 leaving the United States for five and half years going first to Pohnpei then Chuuk in the Federated States of Micronesia. Beth served in Pohnpei assisting Pacific Missionary Aviation as a mission secretary and support staff member as well as organist in the mission church. This began lifelong support of the mission that continues today. Moving next to Naval Station Rota, Spain where Beth served as the Public Works Engineering secretary first and then as the secretary of the U.S. Air Force Detachment. She was also the choir director for the Protestant chapel program, pianist, and organist. Their son David was born in June 1987 at the Naval Hospital one month before returning home to the United States. In August of 1987 the next stop was the University of California at Berkeley where Jim was assigned to earn his master's degree. In 1988 the next move was to the U.S. Naval Academy and Thomas was born in March 1990 at Anne Arundel Hospital in Annapolis. This assignment was followed in May 1991 with assignment to the Navy's Southwest Engineering Command in San Diego. Here in Escondido, Kristen was born in April 1992 and Matthew in July 1994.This tour was followed by an assignment to Naval Submarine Base, Bangor in Washington State in September 1994 and then our final assignment at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown in 1997. Katie was born in September 1998 in Newport News, Virginia. While in Yorktown Beth was the chapel music director and served both the Protestant and Catholic services.
The family moved to Kingwood arriving in August 2001 and Beth became immediately involved in church music programs at Kingwood First Baptist Church and eventually began supporting the Humble ISD system as well as Covenant Christian school in Kingwood. With a move to Grace Reformed Baptist Church in 2006 these roles continued till 2020 when Beth retired in musical performance and support roles.
Beth enjoyed cruises and road trips and impromptu music with her friends and children. She enjoyed cross stitching and crocheting, loved snorkeling in the South Pacific and Caribbean, reading mystery novels aloud as we drove on long road trips between duty stations and visiting family in Florida and California, watching archaeology documentaries, and visiting sites, she was a constant rock collector and amateur geologist, an accomplished gardener, and a dedicated birdwatcher. She loved astronomy and would instigate family outings to watch meteor showers and to see the distant stars through our family telescope. Star gazing and satellite watching in the clear skies of the South Pacific will forever be a memory we shared together as a young newly married couple.
Beth was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Betty Leupp, of Camarillo, California and is survived by her husband, Jim, by her children David, Thomas and wife Savannah, Kristen , Matthew, and Kathryn. She is also survived by her siblings, sister Debra Livingston and husband David, brother Dwight and wife Glenna , and brother Archer and wife Donna. The memorial service will be held at Grace Reformed Baptist Church on Monday, May 29th at 10:30 located at 1599 Northpark Drive, Kingwood, Texas 77345. A lunch reception follows at Chimichurri's in Kingwood.
In lieu of flowers or charitable gifts, please donate to the UT MD Anderson Cancer Center Garden and Parks Endowment in Beth's honor as the beauty of nature brings much relief to the patients, their families, and staff. Jim managed this endowment during his career at MD Anderson and it was used to make many improvements which would have gone unfunded if not for the generosity of donors. The following link can be followed, and the donor should note in Memory of Elizabeth Power and then click the box "I'd like to choose where my donation will go" and select OTHER for the category and write in Garden and Parks Endowment. If you have any questions, please call Jim at 713-870-3108 to assist you.
