Obituary

Gary M. Singerman, 83, passed away Monday, April 4, 2022 at Methodist Hospital The Woodlands of complications from heart disease. He was born May 28, 1938 in Cleveland, Ohio, the eldest of the five children born to Harvey and Lillian Elefant Singerman.
Gary grew up on a farm near tiny Hambden, Ohio. From his earliest days, Gary was adventurous and talented. As an older brother to five, he was perpetually ready to lead his siblings in a new venture, whether catching frogs at the creek, fixing something around the farm, or doing acrobatics into the hay in the barn. At Chardon High School, he played the trumpet for the school band and for football games. He also photographed the games and developed the film in a home darkroom he helped his father build. He lettered in track and field, building his own pole-vault equipment at home to practice. Later in life, Chardon High School would feature him in their Hall of Fame publication for his many professional achievements.
Playing the trumpet was a big part of Gary's life in his middle and older childhood years. He studied at the Hruby Conservatory of Music in Cleveland and often practiced hours a day. He played at community events in their small town. He played Taps, for instance, at a community Memorial Day observation. He once won a music competition by playing Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight of the Bumblebee, a very difficult piece. His high school bandleader asked him to play it again, impromptu, the following night for a Chardon High School concert. That performance (and the thunderous applause) is remembered fondly to this day.
Gary met Helen Pauline (Polly) Truesdell in a shared chemistry class at Ohio University. (In later life, Gary and Polly liked to mock argue whether broken test tubes or a particular skirt created the first spark.) They married on November 22, 1958 in a simple ceremony and began their life together. Gary had turned his attention to the sciences, having set aside his music and a music scholarship, going on to earn a BS in Chemistry from Ohio University in 1961 and a Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh in 1965. Gary taught chemistry at Waynesburg College, in Pennsylvania, and then undertook post-doctoral studies at the University of New Mexico. While still in his late 20s, Gary won a Fulbright Fellowship to teach at the University of Ceylon in Sri Lanka, so he and Polly and their two small children spent a year in the mountainous Sri Lankan area near Kandy.
On returning to the US, Gary did corporate research and development at Gulf Research, and at Pennzoil as a Vice President. After a few years, he left Pennzoil to establish his own laboratory where he developed household products. Those products are now manufactured and sold by Singerman Laboratories, owned by his son Mitch and wife Marie together with partner Pat Mahoney.
During his career as a scientist, Gary's research resulted in 25 patents, and he authored some 35 scholarly papers, convention and seminar lectures and talks. Of particular note, he wrote a 300-page article on the chemistry and synthesis of cinnolines, published as part of the John Wiley and Sons series "The Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds". (Cinnolines are important, but difficult to synthesize, chemical structures in the medical-pharmaceutical field.) Outside of his professional life, Gary was a valued volunteer at CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) for several years, and was awarded Volunteer of the Year in 2005. During "retirement," he also wrote four books on nutrition.
In his most recent years, Gary enjoyed spending time at home and doing DIY improvement projects. He was an avid reader, a good cook, and a devoted grandfather. He was always thrilled to hear about his grandchildren's adventures and accomplishments, and he loved hearing from friends and family by phone. His gentle laugh will be greatly missed.
Gary is survived by his wife Polly, son Mitch (Marie) and daughter Lisa, as well as grandchildren Zeke, Mariah, and Paul. Also surviving are his sister Carolee Blumin and brothers Alan (Veronique), David (Molly), and Mark (Marcy). He is mourned by cousins, nieces, nephews, and many more friends, relatives, and colleagues.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Lillian Elefant Singerman, and brother-in-law Robert Blumin.
Gary would want to extend the family's gratitude to Colleen Robinson, caregiver for many years, who supported him with love, concern, and boundless good humor.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 30th, from 11 A.M. to 2 P.M. at the Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Church, 1370 North Millbend Drive, The Woodlands, Texas, 77380.
