Obituary

James Courtney Davis walked into the arms of Jesus on Sunday, January 26, 2025 while surrounded by the love of his family and friends. He was born on July 18th in 1954 at Fort Knox, Kentucky to Charles and Joan Davis. James and his three younger sisters were proud Army brats. His father's military career saw him traveling the country, including time in Germany, where his parents met and were married. Charles' last duty station was to be an ROTC instructor at SHSU. It was this position that led to James calling the Piney Woods of Huntsville his home. Everyone who knew Jim knows that he lived a life full of adventure. In the beginning of his adulthood found new purpose in Jesus Christ, from then on he was a new creation. His greatest adventure began when he and his wife started their family, 2 boys and a girl.

James' greatest love apart from his family was fire. He was a lifelong wild land firefighter who is renowned across the US for his knowledge and experience fighting many of the nation's largest fires. All who saw him at work were mystified, because to see James fight fires was to see a glimpse into the past of a mountain man at work.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Lorna, children Stephen & Kristen Davis, Timothy & Haley Davis, Sarah and Devon Kooi, along with his six granddaughters, Ella Joan Davis, Rebekah Grace Davis, Sarah Faith Davis, Emory Rose Dayenu Kooi, Louisa Mae Sparrow Kooi, and Olivia Jean Devon Kooi. Sisters Laura Ann and Phil Arey, Janet Marie Davis and Michael Thienes, Nancy Jo and Brett Wilson. Nieces and nephews Austen Fleming, Hannah and Steven Lancaster, and Anna Lee and Charles Pursley. Great niece and nephew Lillith Rae and Tristen Kael Lancaster. Many friends and coworkers will miss him greatly.
