Obituary

Jeanene Krause Smith, born February 21, 1936, left this earth on April 9, 2022, to be in the beloved hands of God and to reunite with her identical twin sister, Jeanette Krause Ekberg, brother, David Albert Krause, and parents. She passed away peacefully at her home in Houston, Texas, surrounded by family. Jeanene was born in Omaha, Nebraska, to Ralph F. Krause and Rose Cloyd Krause. After graduating from the University of Nebraska School of Nursing in 1958, she joined her husband, Rodney Shepard Smith, in El Paso, Texas, where they lived for more than 60 years. While in El Paso, Jeanene was a devoted wife, loving mother to four children, and a nurse for the El Paso Independent School District. Later, she earned her education certificate to teach and create the curriculum for the vocational nursing program at the El Paso Technical High School. She was also on the Community College Board, active in her local Alpha Gamma Delta chapter, PEO Chapter D, Northeast Support Group, and many more organizations. She and Rodney were active members of Trinity-First United Methodist Church their entire time in El Paso. There, they not only raised their children and mentored and cared for dozens if not hundreds more, young and old, but they also worked/volunteered for the church in every conceivable capacity. In retirement, Jeanene and Rodney made it a priority to travel to see their children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and extended family wherever they may be living. This edict took them on adventures all over the world. Plus in her copious spare time, Jeanene knitted prayer shawls, compiled and produced a family cook book and wrote a family history book, "Faith & Grub Worms". In 2019, Jeanene and Rodney moved to Houston, Texas, to be closer to family. Jeanene was an amazing woman who inspired and touched many lives and souls in the glory of God. She always invited others into her circle so no one was left out, and no better prayer partner could you ever find. Jeanene is survived by her husband, Rodney Shepard Smith; older brother, Ralph F. Krause, Jr.; sisters-in-law, Janice Krause and Pamela Krause; daughters, Debbie Byam (Sherwood R. Byam III), Pamela Jo Leighton (Roy Dean Leighton, Jr.), and Kim Logan (John Logan, Jr.); son, Matthew Smith (Elizabeth Smith); 15 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held in Houston, Texas, August 20, 2022. If you want to send flowers, please send a plant that can be planted in Jeanene and Rodney's garden instead. Donations can be made in Jeanene's name to The Methodist Children's Home in Waco, Texas.
