Obituary

Joan Elizabeth Carpentier Scheider DECEMBER 10, 1940– FEBRUARY 5, 2023

Joan Elizabeth (Carpentier) Scheider, 82, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 5, 2023, in The Woodlands, Texas. In the days preceding her passing, her family and friends were able to share their love and affection for her and whisper their tearful good-byes. Joan was born in Providence, Maine on December 10, 1940, along with her identical twin sister, Jeanne (Polarolo).

Joan married the love of her life, John (Jack) Conrad Scheider, on June 30, 1962. Even after a marriage spanning over 50 years, Jack affectionately referred to Joan as "his bride". As a further demonstration of his great love, Jack donated a kidney to Joan in 2004, saving and enhancing her quality of life.

Joan loved to travel the world, and she and Jack visited many destinations including several trips to Hawaii, Europe, the Caribbean, and Mexico. Her three daughters took a final excursion to Galveston with her in August 2022, and they spent hours watching dolphins, shopping, and reminiscing. Visiting with her five granddaughters provided her with great joy and she never turned down an opportunity to spend time with them. One time-honored tradition was the annual gingerbread house project followed by a dramatic reading of "The Night Before Christmas".

Joan was a championship tennis player well into her 70's, excelling against opponents decades younger than her. At age 73, she and her

team won state in the 65+ category, a distinction she was especially proud of. In her later years, she found a new passion in pickle ball. On or off the court, she was a formidable player and studied the game religiously.

Any discussion of Joan's life would be incomplete without describing her immense faith in God and the Catholic Church. She took two pilgrimages to Medjugorje, studying the Virgin Mary and other saints. Her second trip there, she brought her three daughters to immerse them in the church's history and beauty of the sacred ground.

Joan worked tirelessly as a volunteer for the St. Vincent de Paul society, delivering meals, services, and financial assistance to those in great need in the community. She impacted hundreds of lives with her philanthropic deeds and donations.

Joan is survived by her daughters- Debbie Hesse; Donna Hawkins and husband, Bill; Dianne Glover and husband, Phil; granddaughters- Ashley Welborn Shah and husband Rishi; Brittany Welborn; Gabriella Hesse; Hannah Hesse; and Katie Glover.
