IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John
Floyd
February 13, 1953 – June 22, 2022
John Alan Floyd, 69, went to be with his Lord and family in Heaven on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, succumbing to his years-long battle with COPD. He died in his home in Houston, Texas sometime during the night with his beloved little dog ZZ by his side - passing privately as he had wished to do.
John was born on February 13, 1953 in Houston, TX to Joseph (JB) and Mary Floyd, the first of two sons. He spent his early years at South Park Baptist Church and attended Jones High School. John enlisted in the Air Force at the age of 17 and served in the Vietnam War from 1971 to 1974, working as a combat engineer in the RED HORSE (Rapid Engineer Deployable Heavy Operational Repair Squadron Engineer) squadron and earned the rank of sergeant by the end of his service. In 1975 he was married to Ida Jean Peterson and from the marriage of 27 years had two children, Cara and Matthew Floyd. In 1983, he and his wife proudly purchased a new home in Northwest Houston in which to raise their young family and John lived there as a caring and sociable neighbor for the rest of his life. During this time, he built a solid career working in the energy transportation and logistics industry. John served in many critical operational positions throughout his career at a handful of companies for over 40 years, finally retiring from his role of Evening Operations Manager at Pinch Transport in early 2020.
John was a charismatic and gregarious person with a unique style inspired by his love of blues and rock-n-roll. As a teenager he loved listening to The Beach Boys and began spending time at the beach. He took up surfing and adopted the habit of wearing Hawaiian shirts (a habit he kept up for many years to come). He was a self-taught guitarist from a young age and amassed a small collection of beautiful and valuable guitars. He was a craftsman, having developed his natural artistic abilities over the course of his life in many ways. As a child he drew and painted. He became an intricate model car builder and both a carpenter and talented woodworker. John's creative affinities were passed on to both of his children, as was his great sense of humor. He attributed his love of laughter to his grandmother, Annie Fay Floyd, whom he loved dearly. He had a passion for classic cars and Harley Davidson motorcycles, remembering fondly his "plum crazy" purple '57 Chevy muscle car and cherishing his 2003 Soft Tail FLSTS 100th Anniversary Commemorative Edition Harley Davidson motorcycle. John was an avid dog owner, having grown up with dogs and keeping one his whole life. He named his last dog ZZ after one of his favorite bands, ZZ Top.
John was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Wyatt Douglass (Doug) Floyd. He is survived by his children, Cara Rucker and Matthew Floyd, his grandchildren, Brandon Rucker and Leighton Floyd, his nieces, Leah Callahan, Laura Floyd, and Leslie Branscum, his stepmother Joyce Whitaker Floyd, and many loving relatives, friends, neighbors, and co-workers.
