Kirsten Marie Fearn (née Jacobsen) left this Earth on October 2 nd , 2021, two days after her 85 th birthday. Born in Viborg, Denmark, in 1936, she grew up on the grounds of a prestigious country hospital, where her dear father, Holger Jacobsen, was Chief Physician. Her family witnessed the end of WWII in Europe, and Kirsten pursued an education as a physical therapist. She married Daniel James Fearn of New York in 1959 in Viborg, and the two shared a lifetime living around the world: in New York City, Sweden, Germany, Turkey, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, Ohio, and Prescott, Arizona, in addition to many travels. In New York City, Kirsten worked at Columbia Children's Hospital and as a multi-lingual guide at the United Nations. She was a genius with languages and spoke four fluently. Moving around the world for three decades, she successfully raised a family and did charitable work wherever she went. Kirsten helped the sick and the poor, volunteered at orphanages, taught children with disabilities, and raised funds to help the truly needy. One of her favorite activities was helping place orphans from Korea with adoptive families in Europe, and she flew with the orphans to make sure they settled in safely. In retirement in Prescott, she volunteered weekly at Yavapai Regional Medical Center, worked with the blind, gave presentations about Danish culture and the works of Hans Christian Andersen, and supported groups that care for animals and women's health. Her boundless heart touched many people's lives.
For her grateful children—Hilary, Erik, Eva, and Ian—she was always there with kindness and patience. She made each day hyggelig (Danish for cozy/merry) and supported us as only a mother can: unwavering encouragement, many hugs, volunteering with our schools and scout troops, and making birthdays and Christmas special even when it was sometimes a challenge to do so. She showed her children (and others) how to be good parents and good humans. Kirsten's hallmark was humor—she cheered people with jokes and looked for joy in almost every situation.
When a stroke, a broken leg, and her husband's death in 2016 knocked her down, she relocated to Houston so that Hilary, Chris, and their family could help care for her needs.
Kirsten joins Daniel and her brother Mogens and leaves behind many who love and miss her:
Children: Hilary, Erik, Eva, Ian
Grandchildren: Adam (Ashley), Erik, James, Meghan, William, Sylvie, Charley, Ryan, Evan, Logan
Sister-in-law: Inger-Lise
And the many friends from around the world who remember her warmth and kindness.
We miss her deeply and strive to carry on her legacy of love and charity.
