Obituary

Lyla Mae (Klein) Schnase passed away peacefully July 1, 2024, in Houston, Texas, surrounded by her family.  She was 94 years old.

Lyla was born the youngest of seven children on September 9, 1929, in Roseland, Nebraska, to Peter and Lena (Reis) Klein.  She grew up on the Adams County Poor Farm, which was managed and worked by her parents, who took care of the tenants and farmed the land.  She attended primary school in a one-room schoolhouse before going to Roseland High School, where she graduated in 1946.  While there, she participated in basketball, 4-H, choir, and cheerleading, and she held various class officer positions.  After graduation, Lyla worked as a telephone operator for the Telephone Company in Hastings, Nebraska.

While in Hastings, Lyla and Ronald Schnase were married October 6, 1950 (on his birthday), in Redeemer Lutheran Church.  They moved to Texas for Ron's employment, living in Eagle Pass, Sonora, and Del Rio, where they raised their children.  While living in Eagle Pass, they attended the Methodist church and have been faithful members ever since, Lyla teaching children's Sunday School and delivering Meals on Wheels for years.  In 2003, they moved to Houston to be closer to their children.

Lyla loved traveling on road trips with family and friends, watching sports, sewing, cooking, gardening, music, ice cream, and every minute with her grandchildren.  She was loving and kind, her faith strong and her humor clever and silly.  She loved nothing more than being with family and friends, talking and laughing… and we will all miss her very much.

Lyla is survived by her sons, Dr. John Schnase and husband Ed Cunnius of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Bishop Robert Schnase and wife Esther of San Antonio, Texas, and daughter Mary Louise Price and husband Randall of Houston, Texas; grandchildren Karl and Paul Schnase and Lyla Mae Price; along with many nieces, nephews and dear friends.  She is preceded in death by her loving husband of nearly 71 years, Ronald Schnase; three brothers, Glenn, Orville, and Calvin; and three sisters, Goldae Whiting, Helen Rothfus, and Hazel Manske.

The family wishes to thank the caregivers at Cypress Assisted Living as well as Millette for their years of loving attention and care.
