Matalee Crump Smith, 89, of Alexandria, Louisiana died Saturday, January 9, 2021, after a brief time at HCA Houston Healthcare Mainland in Texas City, Texas.
Born July 30, 1931 in Alexandria, Louisiana. She was a daughter of the late James D. Crump, Sr. and Nettie (Dunn) Crump. Matalee was a graduate of Bolton High School and went to work at Guaranty Bank after graduation. She worked as a bank teller and officer at the Park Avenue Branch for Guaranty Bank and then retired with Hibernia Bank. Matalee lived almost her entire life in Alexandria near family where she loved cooking, sewing, and gardening. She was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church in Alexandria and participated in the church's 50/50 Sunday school class, the bowling league, the women's circle meetings, the garden club, the church choir, and Joy Makers, a group that visited nursing homes weekly to sing for residents. Later in life, she also enjoyed oil painting. Matalee and Paul made many craft items particularly bird houses for the church's craft shows. She enjoyed traveling to see relatives in Ohio and visits with family at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
No services will be held at this time due to coronavirus. Services will be scheduled through Kramer Funeral Homes, Alexandria at a later date. She will be buried in Greenwood Memorial Park Cemetery, Pineville.
Her husband, Paul Smith, preceded her in death by two days. They were married for 68 years and still loved to hold hands.
Preceded in death were her parents; her husband; sisters, Mildred Mooney and LaVerne Crump; brothers, James D. Crump, Jr., Ray Crump, and Lawrence Crump; grandson, Andrew Collins; and nephews, Bobby Walker and Glen Walker.
She is survived by daughters; Kathy Collins (Cameron) of The Woodlands, Texas and Carol Oman (Chris) of Monterey, California; grandson; Austin Collins (Fernanda) and great grandson, Lucas Collins of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; sister-in-law, Jean Crump; and many nephews, nieces, great nephews, and great nieces.
The family thanks the staff at Avanti Senior Living at Augusta Pines in Spring, Texas for caring for her during this past year.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Alexandria, 2727 Jackson Street, Alexandria, LA 71301.
