Obituary
Michael "Mike" Edward Willer, 63, passed away on March 12, 2021 at his home after a lengthy battle with Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD). He was born to Wardlow and Thelma (Montgomery) Willer on March 30, 1957 in Pasadena, TX. Mike is preceded in death by both his parents, older sister Kathleen (Willer) Starks, and his sister-in-law Kathleen (Kuhn) Willer. He leaves behind his wife, Tamara (Vance) Willer, daughter Kathryn Emily Willer, siblings Patrick Willer and Colleen (Willer) Etchberger, her husband Rodney; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A graduate of Sam Rayburn High School, he was active in his school orchestra program and was a Texas all-state violinist. After a short career in plastic refinery, Mike went back to school and studied business at San Jacinto College and the University of Houston. Mike then followed his passion for music and started playing professionally and private teaching both violin and viola. In the early 90s, he taught himself to be a luthier, repairing orchestral string instruments. He was well known in the Houston area for his expertise in selecting quality instruments for any level musician. After working for other instrument retailers, he started Fishburn Violin Shop along with two partners. He was passionate about the arts and making quality music education accessible. He never worked a day in his life, because he loved what he did.
He met his future wife, Tamara, playing in professional orchestras together. Mike was very involved in his daughter, Kathryn's life and was very proud of her accomplishments. He was known for his intelligence, his humor and for his ability to fix anything. In his free time, he loved going to Houston Aeros, Astros and Dynamo games with his friends and family.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 20, 2021 at 10 am at Windwood Presbyterian Church located at 10555 Spring Cypress Rd. Houston, TX 77070, of which he was a member for over 20 years. Masking and social distancing will be required for those who wish to attend. An online live-stream will be available.
