WILLIAM DONALD SMITH
1932-2023
William "Bill" Donald Smith, age 90, passed away Monday, January 2, 2023. He is was born in Erick, Oklahoma on July 2,1932 to Luther and Caryl Smith.
Bill was the seventh child of thirteen children. His mother created a marching band with the all the brothers and sisters when they were young named "One Man's Family Band." They marched in many parades and once during the halftime of a University of Oklahoma football game. Bill played the cymbals.
He met the love of his life in February of 1952, Dorothy "Dottie" Derbyshire, while he was serving in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, and stationed at the U.S. base in Warrington. They married within the year in England where their first child, Buddy, was born.
In January of 1954, upon Bill's fulfillment of his military obligations, Bill, Dottie, and Buddy returned to the United States on a troop ship, where they began their new adventures. After a brief stay in Oklahoma City with his parents, the three moved to Houston and Bill started work with Johns Manville Corp, where he worked his entire career. Dottie and Bill had 2 more children while in Houston, John and Karon.
Bill played golf and was an active bowler till the age 86. Both Bill and Dottie were very house proud and won yard of the month many times.
Bill was preceded in death by wife, Dottie, parents Luther and Caryl Smith, brothers Luther "Buddy" Jr., Andy, Kenneth, Joe, Tommy, and John, sisters Shirley, India, and Ruth Anne.
He is survived by his sisters Martha, Mary Sue, and Dorothy, two sons William "Buddy" Smith and wife Lou, John Smith, and daughter Karon McMahan and husband Robert. Grandchildren are Shane, Andrea, Jack, and Amber. Twelve great grandchildren are Barrett, Tommy, Clara, Tessa, Joelle, Ella, Luke, Micah, Sara, John, Susanna, and April.
At Bill's request, no public service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at alz.org .
